Picking a track 5 is sort of a pressurized decision, but I knew from day one this was probably gonna be it. It’s kind of a song about karma. It’s a song about greed. About how somebody could be your best friend, your companion, your most trusted person in your life and then they could go and become your worst enemy, who knows how to hurt you because they were once your most trusted person. It does remind me of people going through a divorce and having that person that they swore to be with forever then become the person that they spend most of their time talking shit about.
Writing this song, it kind of occurred to me that, in all superhero stories, the hero’s greatest nemesis is the villian that used to be his best friend, that sort of thing. When you think about that, you think about how there’s this beautiful moment in the beginning of a friendship where these people have no idea that, one day, they’ll hate each other and try to really take each other out. I mean, that’s really sad and terrible.

이 곡을 쓰다 보니 깨달은 건, 대부분의 슈퍼히어로 이야기에서 주인공의 가장 강력한 적은 한때 가장 친했던 친구였다는 거예요. 생각해보면, 친구가 되던 처음 순간에는 이 사람들이 언젠가 서로를 미워하게 되고, 서로를 무너뜨리려 하게 될 거라고는 전혀 상상도 못 하잖아요. 그게 정말… 너무 슬프고 잔인한 일인 것 같아요.
